Japanese video game company SEGA Corporation has come back to its negative stance on non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and believes it is part of the future of gaming.

in a recent interviewMasayoshi Kikuchi, who is behind the production of renowned SEGA titles such as Yakuza and Binary Domain, said NFTs and cloud technology are the future of gaming.

In 2021, SEGA executives had said the company was against the idea of integrating NFTs into its games. However, this no longer seems to be the case.

According to him:

Gaming has a history of expansion through the connection of different cultures and technologies. For example, social networking and watching game videos are recent examples.

Kikuchi added that:

It is a natural extension of the future of gaming that will expand into new areas such as cloud gaming and NFT. We also develop SuperGame from the perspective of how far different games can be connected to each other.

Aside from Kikuchi’s interview, SEGA registered two NFT-related trademarks filed with the Japan Patent Office in December 2021, showing that it is indeed interested in NFTs.

What prompted SEGA to warm up to NFTs?

SEGA’s executive team recently said the company would conduct several NFT-centered experiments, adding that it had already begun many different studies and considerations. However, the team claimed that it had not made any decisions regarding NFTs or the play-to-earn (P2E) game model.

To explain why they were hesitant to integrate NFTs into games, the executives cited negative feedback from game company users who had incorporated NFTs into their games.

The officials added that SEGA had to assess matters such as mitigating the negative effects of NFT; how to introduce digital collectibles into its games in compliance with Japanese laws; and how to implement products that the users deem acceptable.

In addition, the team said it needed to verify that NFTs align with the company’s mission to continuously create compelling content.

With the company warming up to NFTs, it’s clear that its experiments offered viable solutions to the above concerns.
