Latest images from ESA Solar Orbiter show the full disk of the Sun and Corona in the highest resolution yet – TechEBlog

european space agency esa sun full disc atmosphere highest resolution

The European Space Agency’s Solar Orbiter gas captured the sun’s entire disk, its outer atmosphere, including the corona, in unprecedented detail. These images were taken when Solar Orbiter was about 75 million kilometers away, halfway between our world and its parent star, using its Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUI), which takes images with such high spatial resolution that a mosaic is created at that close distance. of It takes 25 separate images to cover the entire sun. The entire image is so large that it was captured over a period of more than four hours, as each tile takes about 10 minutes to photograph, including the time it takes for the spacecraft to point from one segment to another. In total, the final image contains more than 83 million pixels in a grid of 9148 x 9112 pixels, or a resolution that is 10 times sharper than what a 4K TV screen can display.

On March 26, Solar Orbiter will reach another milestone in its mission: its first close perihelion. The spacecraft is now in the orbit of Mercury, the inner planet, taking the highest-resolution images of the sun it can take. It also records solar wind data from particles flowing outwards from the sun,” the ESA said.
