The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Monday blocked 16 YouTube channels for “spreading disinformation related to India’s national security, foreign relations and public order”. According to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the blocked YouTube channels and Facebook account had a cumulative viewership of more than 68 crore and were spreading “false, unverified information to incite panic, fuel discord in the community and disrupt public order in India. “It was noted that these channels were used to spread fake news through social media on matters related to national security, India’s foreign relations, harmony in the country and public order,” the government wrote in a press release. “YouTube channels spread false, unverified information to spread panic, stir community dissension and disrupt public order in India. Blocked YouTube-based news channels had a viewership of more than 68 crore,” it added.
In addition, the MeitY said in the release that the YouTube channels in Pakistan were being used in a coordinated manner to post fake news on various topics related to India. The list includes topics such as the Indian military, Jammu and Kashmir, and India’s foreign relations, including in light of the situation in Ukraine.
Recently, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting ordered the blocking of 22 YouTube-based news channels, four of which are from Pakistan, on the grounds that they were spreading fake news that could affect national security, foreign relations and public order.
The ministry has issued instructions since December 2021 to block 78 YouTube-based news channels and several other social media accounts on grounds related to India’s national security, sovereignty and integrity, public order, etc.
“It was determined that a significant amount of fake content published by these Indian YouTube channels related to the ongoing situation in Ukraine and aimed at endangering India’s foreign relations with other countries,” the ministry wrote. in the press release.
