AH Google Pixel 6a vs Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G 2022 comparison

In this article we compare the Google Pixel 6a with the Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G (2022). Many of you who want to buy a mid-tier smartphone are probably considering these two smartphones. Well, if you aren’t, you should. The truth is, these two devices are significantly different from each other, which should make for an interesting comparison. They are significantly different in terms of size, specifications and even appearance.

They’re both somewhat affordable, and while they don’t have the exact same price tag, they’re not far off in comparison. We’ll start by listing their specs, then move on to some other categories. We compare their designs, displays, performance, battery life, cameras and sound. Keep in mind that at the time of writing this article, the Pixel 6a hasn’t been released yet, so we haven’t had a chance to use it yet. That said, let’s start by comparing the Google Pixel 6a versus the Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G (2022).

Google Pixel 6a vs Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G (2022): Design

Design is a subjective thing, but when it comes to building materials, the Pixel 6a has beaten the Moto G Stylus 5G (2022). The handset from Google comes with a metal frame and a 3D thermoformed composite back (plastic). Motorola’s offering, on the other hand, has both a plastic frame and a plastic back. Both phones have a flat screen, with a centered camera hole, although the Pixel 6a has a boxier design (on the front, the Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) has flatter sides).

The bezels are quite thin on both phones and the real difference in their designs can be seen on the back. The Pixel 6a has a rear camera viewfinder inspired by the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. That unit goes from one side of the phone to the other, and it’s a real design statement. The Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) has a more regular camera island on the back, in the top left corner. The Pixel 6a has two cameras on the back, while the Motorola smartphone has three.

The Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) has a side-facing fingerprint scanner (inside the power/lock key), while the Pixel 6a has a bottom display. By the way, the back of the Pixel 6a is flatter than what the Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) offers. Neither phone is particularly grippy, but the Pixel 6a should be easier to use with one hand due to its size. It is significantly smaller than the Moto G Stylus 5G (2022).

The Pixel 6a is a lot shorter, narrower and a bit thinner than Motorola’s offering. It’s also a lot lighter. It weighs 178 grams, while the Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) weighs 215 grams despite its plastic construction.

Google Pixel 6a vs Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G (2022): Display

The Pixel 6a has a 6.1-inch fullHD+ (2400 x 1080) OLED display. This panel supports HDR content and we’re looking at an 83 percent screen-to-body ratio here. That screen offers an aspect ratio of 20:9 and about 429 ppi. It is flat and protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3. We hoped that Google would never go for better screen protection, since the Gorilla Glass 3 is prone to micro-scratches. However, that didn’t happen. This is also a 60Hz screen.

The Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G (2022), on the other hand, has a massive 6.8-inch fullHD+ (2400 x 1080) IPS LCD display. This screen is also flat, but unlike the Pixel 6a’s panel, it’s a high refresh rate screen. We’re looking at a 120Hz panel with a 395 ppi (approximately) here. Here too, Motorola opted for Gorilla Glass 3, in a positive or negative sense. However, this panel is significantly different from the panel that Google provides.

Motorola’s screen offers a much higher refresh rate, something you will feel while using it. That’s really the only advantage it has. The Pixel 6a isn’t out yet, but it’s safe to assume it will offer more powerful colors than this panel while also being brighter. The panel on the Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) is quite old and not exactly impressive.

Google Pixel 6a vs Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G (2022): Performance

The Pixel 6a isn’t out yet, but it’s safe to assume it will deliver great performance, assuming bugs are kept out of the way. It comes with the same SoC, RAM, and storage chips as the Pixel 6. In other words, it includes the Google Tensor SoC along with LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 flash storage. The Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) is inferior on all three accounts. However, is that a reflection of performance?

Well, the Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) comes with the Snapdragon 695, and some of its other internals are a bit older. However, that did not affect the performance. From what we can see, it’s pretty smooth. Actually, it’s smoother than we expected, considering the inside. Motorola has also done a good job on the software side, it seems. However, the question is how long that performance will last with such internals.

If you want a smartphone in the long run, the Pixel 6a might be a better choice. Why? Well, the inside is more future-proof than the one in the Moto G Stylus 5G (2022), at least the performance one. Plus, you’ll receive updates directly from Google.

Google Pixel 6a vs Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G (2022): Battery

The Google Pixel 6a packs a 4,410 mAh battery inside. The Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G (2022), on the other hand, comes with a 5,000 mAh battery. The screen is a lot bigger and offers a much higher refresh rate, so this isn’t surprising at all. However, does it offer good battery life? Well, the Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) offers good battery life. It’s not the best out there, but it’s really good. Talking about exact numbers is pointless though, as your mileage will definitely vary depending on your usage, location, etc.

What about the Pixel 6a? Well, we didn’t get a chance to test the battery life as the phone hasn’t been released yet, at least not at the time of writing this article. It will come in July. That said, the Pixel 6a is expected to offer long battery life based on the specs. Its brother, the Pixel 5a 5G, has a bigger battery, but also has a bigger screen. All things considered, it should offer excellent battery life, although perhaps not at the level of the Pixel 5a 5G. We will see.

Both the Pixel 6a and Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) only support thenewsupdate charging. The Pixel 6a comes with the familiar 18W charging, which isn’t particularly fast, but fairly reliable. The Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) offers less in the charging department. It has a bigger battery and still comes with a 10W charger. Needless to say, it takes a long time to charge the device, about an hour and 40 minutes.

Google Pixel 6a vs Motorola Moto G Stylus 5G (2022): Cameras

The Pixel 6a is expected to have similar camera performance to the Pixel 5a 5G. It could even offer a little more in that area, thanks to Google’s own chip. If we look strictly at the camera hardware (12.2-megapixel main camera, 12-megapixel ultrawide unit), the camera performance should be comparable. In other words, we will probably get great photos out of the phone under any circumstances, despite the outdated camera hardware, Google’s camera algorithms are great.

What about the Moto G Stylus 5G (2022)? It offers a really capable 50-megapixel main camera, in addition to an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. Are the photos good though? Well, although it tends to boost the colors a bit too much, as well as sharpen it every now and then. In low light, color accuracy is lost. However, the ultra-wide camera isn’t nearly as good.

It all points to the Pixel 6a’s better camera performance, but we can’t guarantee that until we’ve tested the device. The Pixel 6a is coming at the end of July, so we’ll have to wait a little longer.

When it comes to a 3.5mm headphone jack, some phones have them, others don’t. The Pixel 6a is the one that doesn’t, while Motorola included it in the Moto G Stylus 5G (2022). The Pixel 5a 5G did have an audio jack, so Google decided to remove it this time. Unfortunately, the Motorola device doesn’t exactly excel in the speaker department.

The Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) has a single speaker on the bottom. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the sound gets weird at higher volumes, it gets too distorted. We’re not sure why the second speaker wasn’t included and why there isn’t a better main unit. The phone is certainly big enough and should have been part of the package.

We expect better things from the Pixel 6a. It will have two speakers, and if those speakers end up performing something akin to the Pixel 6 or the Pixel 5a 5G, we’re good to go.
