British engineer George Frodsham has devised a way to remove diseases from blood using magnets. Called MediSieve, this innovative treatment technology works similarly to dialysis in that it removes a patient’s blood and then infuses it with magnetic nanoparticles designed to bind to a specific disease. These magnets are then used to pull those cells out and trap them before pumping the filtered blood back into the body.
The ultimate goal is for doctors to run a person’s blood through the machine multiple times until the level of disease is low enough to be defeated with basic drugs or even the patient’s own immune system. Frodsham is currently awaiting approval from the UK’s medicines and healthcare products regulatory agency once they have tested the system on patients infected with the malaria parasite. Hopefully this type of system will one day be used for life on other planets.

In theory, you can go after almost anything. We can remove poisons, pathogens, viruses, bacteria, anything that we can specifically bind to. So it’s a very powerful potential tool,” says Frodsham.
