2020’s Streets of Rage 4 is a modern take on a classic action fighting game.

The classic 90s beat-’em-up Streets of Rage will be made into a movie from the creator of the John Wick movies.

After making the Action series starring Keanu Reeveswriter Derek Kolstad is not involved in the upcoming John Wick 4 (which has been postponed to March 2023). Some people would use the spare time to plop down on the couch to play video games, but Kolstad apparently took it a step further and wrote a big-screen version of the iconic Sega side-scrolling game.

Video game movie adaptations just aren’t going away, are they? There is a long history of iconic games turned into terrible movies. the recent Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City didn’t really set the world on fire, but the Uncharted Editing with Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg and Sonic the hedgehog 2 (now in theaters) struggled to become the biggest game movies ever this year. So the pipeline from console to silver screen probably won’t dry up anytime soon. And sometimes a combination of subject and filmmaker comes along that makes you, you know what, that works.

The first game came out for the Sega Genesis console in 1991, with two sequels from the 90s, followed by a late Streets of Rage 4 in 2020. Sega and dj2 Entertainment (the production company behind the Sonic films) are developing the film, according to Deadline, which Kolstad wrote as a spec script.

The Streets of Rage story is simple and flexible enough for a film adaptation to flesh out the story while maintaining the kick. The games followed tough cops Adam Hunter, Axel Stone, and Blaze Fielding as they blasted their way through hordes of 16-bit ninjas and other criminals.

Kolstad also wrote the critically acclaimed Bob Odenkirk action movie Nobody and co-produced Marvel’s Disney Plus series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Let’s hope his movie versions will find room for plenty of button-smashing bad guys, not to mention appearances from the game’s brilliantly named characters like Max Thunder, Skate, and Dr. Zan.
